Clover Leigh golf report for the first week of July 2015

Please find below the golf report as issued to the local newspaper - except for the following excerpt from the Rules of Golf:

“Rule 7-2. Practice during a round

Between the playing of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practice putting or chipping on or near:

a. the putting green of the hole just played

b. any practice putting green, or

c. the teeing ground of the next hole to be played,

provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play.”

So, did you ever miss a putt but knew you could sink it? Line it up again once the hole is complete - and torture yourself with what might have been!

Saturday’s round was played in memory of Vera McPake, a former member at Clover Leigh. Vera’s Day was a three-person ambrose, select partners event and attracted a strong field of 23 players.

Many travelled from Boorowa, Binalong, Bigga and Young to join the locals at Crowther. The winners were visitors from Binalong, John Lee, Chris Glover and Wayne Trethowan with a nett score of 57 and five sixths. Runners up were Jasmin Olive, Chris Bale and George Gerrard with 59 and one sixth.

Despite being early clubhouse leaders, the ultimate winners of the Bradmans was Kate Marwood, Maree Marland and Hannah Craig with a nett 66 and one sixth.

Mens longest drive to Chris Bale and nearest the pin to Richard Hall on the seventeenth with 300 centimetres. Womens longest drive to Maree Marland and nearest the pin to Kate Marwood on the eighth with 212 centimetres.

Sunday saw the crowds swell even further with reinforcements from Boorowa and Binalong for a total field of 39 players. The flock gathered for the final of the South West district’s small clubs pennants. Five representatives from each club played a matchplay team’s event, while all players were part of the team stableford competition.

Clover Leigh and Boorowa played off for third and fourth place in the pennants. For Clover Leigh, Peter Frecklington won one up over Roger Mason and Kate Marwood won four and three over Craig Mason. For Boorowa,  Rob Styles won one up over Mick McDonell, Rob Dunwoodie won three and two over George Gerrard and Roger Green won one up over Graeme Bell. This leaves Clover Leigh with the wooden spoon in the 2015 competition.

Bigga and Binalong played off for first and second places. For Bigga, Rob Chudleigh won four and two over Paul Glover and Wade Picker won six and five over Dave Bedford. For Binalong , Chris Glover won seven and five over Doug Picker and Mark Grigg won seven and six over Jasmin Olive. This left the tally at two matches each.

The final grouping of number one players, Chris Bale of Bigga and Mick Paterson of Binalong, stood all square on the eighteenth tee. Chris had a super drive up the fairway 30 metres short of the par 4 green, but left his chip just short. Mick’s drive was on the next fairway, but he hit an accurate approach shot to the green to be six metres from the pin. Following up with a great putt for a birdie gave Mick the hole and the match. His win gave Binalong the edge over Bigga three and two.

Congratulations to Binalong as winners of the 2015 small clubs pennant trophy.

In the stableford competition, womens winner was Ethel Lee with 36 points and runner up to Kate Marwood with 34 points. Mens winner was Chris Glover with 50 points (yes, 50) and runner up to Wade Picker with 42 points. Junior trophy to Craig Mason with 29 points.

Womens longest drive to Kate Marwood and nearest the pin to Jasmin Olive on the seventh with four metres. Mens longest drive to James Green and nearest the pin to Roger Mason on the seventh with 173 centimetres.

Balls for birdies on the Betty Freck birdie holes to Mick Paterson (9 and 18), Rob Styles (9 and 18) and Peter Frecklington (18th).

Overall results in the small clubs stableford competition were Boorowa with 88 points, Bigga with 83 points, Binalong with 72 points and Clover Leigh with 15 points. Congratulations to Boorowa.

Next Saturday will be the July monthly medal stroke round.
