Please find below the golf report as issued to the local newspaper - except for the anecdote about the golfer who brought his small dog to the golf course. On the first green, the visitor stood at a five metre putt and promptly sank it . As the ball rattled in the cup, the little dog stood on his hind legs and went “yip yip”. One of locals remarked “I haven’t seen that before. What does he do if you miss?” “He turns somersaults,” said the visitor. “How many does he do?” asked the local. “That depends on how hard I kick him.”
The course was booked out on Tuesday by Indra, the god of rain, so there was no play for the day. But the subsequent greening of the landscape was appreciated by the small knot of hardcore players who turned out on Saturday for a single stableford competition.
Indra’s cousin, Mary, the god of hail, fortuitously turned up early and finished playing the course just before the scheduled tee time of the remaining players.
Winning with a total of 37 points was Michael McDonell. A close second to Reg Frecklington with 36 points. No other scores were honourable enough for mention.
Michael also took out nearest the pin on the eighth hole with a distance of 550 cm and only narrowly missed the opportunity to improve his eclectic scorecard.
Play of the day went to Reg who had consecutive gobbles with a chip-in on the ninth and another on the tenth. Going for the hat-trick on the eleventh, Reg left his thirty metre chip just thirty cm short of the cup, missing out on a prominent entry in the record books.
The only participant disappointed with the day’s play was Corvus Coronoides who just failed to carry an Optima on the fifteen hole. But he’ll come back again. Probably next Saturday, for the May monthly medal, a stroke competition.
A reminder that play on the day will commence at 10 am. Allow for a few minutes after play on the ninth for lunch - your own. Play on Tuesday also starts at that civilised hour and will be a single stableford event as usual.
