Golf Report for
4th October 2014

With warm spring weather on show over the weekend, we saw members and visitors converge on the Clover Leigh Golf Course to enjoy a jammed pact program of events on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

All started on Friday afternoon with a Two Person Ambrose which was held over the back nine, when partners were decided from a draw just prior to hit-off.

The winning pairing of Peggy Searle and Peter Frecklington came in with a result of nett 28 from next best Nicki Draper and Nareda Leary with nett thirty and one eighth.

Best NTP?s on the day to George Gerrard for the men on the twelfth hole with 4.62 metres and to Nicki for the ladies on the seventeenth with a closer 2.72 metre.

On Saturday a novelty event that could best described as a Two Person Four Ball Best Ball Stableford Ambrose draw for partner?s event with twist which was proudly sponsored by very loyal members, George Gerrard and Graeme Bell.

A short description of what competitors were up for in the day?s play goes as follows, when teeing off the best shot of the pair is taken and then they play their own ball as a Stableford to the cup. The twist is to get the Fourball result on each hole was that teams had to nominate at least nine tee drives each for their round and depending on who?s drive was taken it determined if the best point score on the hole or where both scores were added to get a result on each hole.

Coming in with 69 points in total was co-sponsor Graeme with Mick from the team of Chris Eaton and the other co-sponsor George, who managed to take out the runner?s up trophy from a close count-back to Sue Wakefield and Andy Connelly when both recorded 61 points a piece.

Longest drive to Peter Freck for the men and to Cheryl Ramsay for the ladies.

The men?s best NTP?s for the day going to George once again on the third with 6.16 metres, Wayne Smith on the sixteenth with 3.32 metres and to Graeme on the eight with a close 1.44 metres.

Ladies NTP?s to Cheryl on the sixteenth with 2.5 metres and to Nareda on the seventeenth hole with very close 45 centimetres.

A gobble each to Peter Freck and Fred Douglass, and with two a piece it was Nicki, Freck, Diane Connelly and Peter Searle.

There were birdies a plenty, with at least fifteen been found on the cards.

But there was two birdies scored on the Betty Freck memorial ninth when both George and Tania Baldwin received a ball trophy each.

The evening saw a most enjoyable meal which took the form of a Hot Dish which was supplied by members.

The rest of the evening was spent in fundraising for the club when all in attendance enjoyed wagering their hard earnings on several horse races that were held under the watchful eyes of the qualified course officials.

With the change for daylight saving during the previous night and the earlier tee time of eleven a.m., we saw a full field front up to partake for it nineteenth time, the ?Clover Leigh Cup,? a Four Ball Best Ball Stableford event when competitors partner?s are drawn just before hit-off.

The day?s event was sponsored by the Club and the South West DGA with many other trophies been added by visiting player?s from Terrigal who have now been making the trip up for the October Long Weekend for a number of years now.

The winning names that are yet to be engraved on the Cup for this year were the pairing of Nicki Draper and Nico who had the best score for the day with 48 points, from Nareda Leary and the in form Graeme Bell only one point behind with 47 points.

Just a note that a good number of the 47 points that were recorded came from the stick of Graeme when he scored the best individual Stableford result for the day with 43 points. Sadly that form did not rub off on his beloved Bulldog several hours later.

The South West District Golf Association?s Visitors trophies went to Andy Connelly for the men with 34 points and to Judi Eaton for the ladies with 35 points.

Longest drives to Macus Dowling for the men and to Tania for the ladies.

There were no NTP?s recorded for men, but the ladies best NTP?s went to Michelle Collyer on the sixteenth with five metres and to Cheryl on the seventeenth hole with 6.25 metres.

A gobble each to George and Wayne, and two gobbles going to Sue on the first and eleventh holes.

Birdie were well down on the previous day when only four were to be found on the cards when Cheryl had hers on the second, Wayne on the fifteenth and both Chris Eaton and Peter Searle scored theirs on the Betty Freck memorial birdie hole.

Following presentations of the day?s events, all that stayed on sat down to the NRL Grand Final between the Doggies and the Bunnies, when the result of the mighty Rabbitohs win was what to be the most roundly welcomed winner of the competition for many a year.

After the revelry of the previous night we saw members from Clover Leigh take on the mob from Terrigal in what has become a most enjoyable event and to have the honour of holding up the ?BIG AMBROSE,? trophy for 2014.

With teams lead by Freck for Clover Leigh and Peter Searle for Terrigal the match was conducted over nine holes.

On the fifth hole, Terrigal went out to a one up lead. But the next hole, sixth, two brilliant hits from Clover Leigh?s newly signed up member, Macus and Peter Freck?s second that managed to run pass the 500 hundred metres away green by several paces, stopped the rot before it started and both side came away with a squared result on the hole.

It took a thirty metre chip from Macus?s better half, Lexie, on eighth hole that brought Clover Leigh back in to the match when all was square going up the ninth.

With Clover Leigh?s first two shots running to about metre to the far end on green and the Terrigal Mobs a further two metres on it looked more then likely that the field would be going down the tenth to get a final result.

After many close misses from Terrigal?s team they had not managed to hole out. But with great care and determination, Clover Leigh?s George, hammered home a deceive victory with what echoed the words of the late Frank Hide, ?It?s High, It?s Long, And It?s Straight Between The Post.?

The club would like to thank every one who partook over the four days, those who supplied the trophies, especially to ?Poppa Fug Factory,? Young Embroidery Services for the main prizes and the donation of raffles, Mark Leary who always supplies an assortment of prizes, and to the Terrigal Mob for the raffle on Saturday night.

And a special thank you to the loyal members over the last year or so who have volunteer a great deal of their time and efforts to help keep the course in the great condition it is and at this time of the year for when we hold this most enjoyable weekend. Something the entire visitors appreciated very much.

Also to those who we know would have been in attendance if possible, which are not in the best of health at the moment or having other commitments, we all hope to see you out at Clover Leigh before to long.

This Saturday at 12pm, the October, Monthly Medal Stroke event will take place.
